Out and About Okinawa

Hello friends and family, I hope you all are well.  It’s been a while since my last post, the kids have kept me busy this summer and away from the blog.  The kids started back to school this week and I must say I’m so glad to get back to our normal routine. Today’s post is from a little camping trip we took a few weeks ago to White Beach.  I wanted to capture some of the locals and the beautiful scenes along the way.  White Beach is on the east side of the island, about a thirty minute drive from our home.   It’s a great place to snorkel with the kids, they have campers and rooms available on base, we have really enjoyed visiting here over the summer and will definitely be back.

Local Farmer’s Market

Hello friends and family, thank-you for checking out today’s blog post.  I haven’t posted in a while, it’s been full blast since the kiddos got out of school and the hubs has been out-of-town!  Thankfully we got Cole home this week and are looking forward to celebrating Independence Day with friends this year on the island.

This post is about our travels around the island of Okinawa.  Since moving to the island we’ve had the chance to visit many of the local produce markets and experience many new foods.  I’ve been meaning to share this post for a while now because this has been one of my favorite things to do since arriving.  Each little market is unique in its own way, which makes it exciting because you never know what you may bring home with you. Many locals visit the produce markets daily to purchase fresh produce for their meals. You can get anything from fresh-cut orchids to fresh lobster at these local markets.  The colors and smells are amazing and you get a little taste of how the locals cook their meals.

Can’t forget the flowers when you hit the market, because they are beautiful and very affordable.  Any assortment will run you around five to ten dollars.

The next few pictures are a type of dessert or candy that I see in many of the markets and I’m not sure what it’s made of.  It looks like fudge, but it’s actually much softer.  Ava of course wanted the pink one, we tried a bite each.  It’s not sweet, really didn’t have much flavor at all, but it sure looks yummy.image

I hope you enjoyed touring a few of our favorite market spots and got a little taste of Okinawa.

Have a wonderful and safe fourth with family and friends!

Till next time, konnichiwa!

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Hello friends and family, I hope you are all well and have enjoyed your weekend.  A couple of weeks ago Cole took the week off so we could explore the island.  The kids had wanted to visit the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, so we made a day of it and had a wonderful time.  I thought I’d share with you a few pictures from our trip.

The main attraction at the aquarium is the Kuroshio Sea Tank, this tank holds three whale sharks and manta rays, along with countless other beautiful sea creatures.   This is the view from the cafe, the tank is 10 m deep, 35 m wide, and 27 m long.  Not a bad view for a coffee and ice cream with the kiddos.

They have an arboretum, beautiful emerald beaches, and a playground, which are free on the park grounds.  If you are on the island and haven’t been, with or without kids it is definitely worth the trip.  Check out the aquarium’s website for park hours and fees, www.oki-churaumi.jp.

Have a wonderful day!

Make A Big Impact With Dark Walls

Hello friends, I hope you all are enjoying this beautiful weather.  Not sure if I’m ready for the heat and humidity that’s fast approaching the island. I’m curious to see how it’s going to compare to summers back home in Alabama.

My last home decor post was about white walls and bold accents, this week let’s look at bold walls and neutral accents.  This, I must admit is a bit more intimidating, but the end result can make such a beautiful, bold statement.  Black is also a timeless, elegant color, giving a room a more formal feel.  Depending on the size of the room or amount of light, an accent wall may be all you need, as seen in a few of the pictures below.  But if you have a large room with a lot of natural light, dark walls can make the room look and feel cozy.

dark 1via www.blog.thenest.com Dark walls can make your artwork pop or if you have interesting architectural features the contrast will highlight the details.

black 2

Camp Foster’s Spring Bazaar

This weekend there’s a spring bazaar at Camp Foster, with over fifty concessionaires to enjoy.  Many of the booths are military spouses selling there pieces and there are also locals selling furniture, artwork, and antiques.  It’s a great place to shop for one of a kind gifts for family and friends.  You can find anything from fishing poles to hair bows and tutus.  Today there was a live auction with beautiful pottery and artwork to bid on.  I would have to say the hand painted antiques are definitely my favorite, the blue pieces are on my wish list before heading back to the states.

White Walls, No Worries

Hi friends, as always I hope your week is going great.  We are all doing well, glad to have Cole back home, and the kids are staying busy with school activities.  We’ve been here five months now, hard to believe how fast time flies.

This blog post is about what challenges many of us with each move into a new home, it’s the white walls. After ten moves over the last twelve years, I’ve grown tired of painting and repainting.  It doesn’t matter if you’re in a rental, base housing, or a newly built home, many of us are afraid to take the first step.  Paint isn’t your only option, don’t worry if the commitment of wallpaper scares you, there are many options at your fingertips that are less frightening.  One of the most current trends is a clean white room and using bold accessories to add  life to the space.

Let’s start with this lovely entryway.  If you notice, the bones are the white walls, hardwood flooring, and the wooden door.  The accessories with all the bright colors and textures draw your eye in and you don’t notice the walls anymore.  The first thing I notice is the Aztec patterned rug, which is on my wish list.  The next key element is the mirrors, it’s like adding another window to the space, bringing in light and color.  The linen curtains and last but not least the beautiful fresh-cut flowers finish off the space.   These four key elements can be easily changed or removed without breaking the bank.

white 1

white 2

via www.decorpad.com  Another white room taken to another level with two colors you wouldn’t think to put together, green and gray. The rug, bedding, and curtains are the three key pieces to accomplish this look.

WHITE 3

via www.kishaniperera.com One of my favorite rooms of all time, I’ve shared this beauty in a previous post.  This once white room looks so soothing and comfortable with an eclectic mix of different patterns, colors, and textures.

dining 5

via www.kishaniperera.com Love the simplicity of this dining room,  designed by the very talented and one of my favorites, Kishani Perera (check out her website to see more of her amazing work).  This Aztec rug is the centerpiece and makes the room.

white 6

via www.jenlangston.com How about this neutral room with a purple couch,  this piece adds life to the space. When using such a bold color, you want to keep the accessories to a minimum to avoid looking cluttered.

white 7

www.pinterest.com Go bold with striped curtains!  Your curtains can make the room, these most definitely do.  Curtains are one of the first and most important key elements to a room, they add warmth and give the room a finished touch.

white 7

www.pinterest.com  This room is full of bold colors in the bedding and rug, perfect for any little princess.

white 9

via www.houseofturquoise.com  Another white room with small splashes of color, it’s easy to change this look with the seasons or if you grow tired of the original details.  You’re not breaking the bank by changing a few pillows and your curtains.

white 10

via www.theeverygirl.com  Bold doesn’t always have to be bright colors, try black and white with and few small splashes of color spread around the room, an equally beautiful and timeless look.

See, white walls aren’t as intimidating as you thought, just start with a favorite colorful piece and work off of that.  The white walls are a blank canvas for you to create something beautiful.  You don’t have to decorate the entire space all at once, buy a piece, see how you feel about it and step-by-step build on the key pieces.  If you get stuck or need a little nudge in the right direction just shoot me a picture of your space on my “Contact” page or on Facebook.

I also wanted to share a nice website I stumbled upon the other day, www.DecorPad.com,  this site is strictly design ideas from designers and decorators, the photos are categorized by rooms. It’s easy to navigate,  but be careful, it’s a rabbit hole that you may fall into and take an hour or two to get out of.

Hope this post gave you few ideas to get started on your design dilemma!  Have a great weekend!

Chikyu Zakka Warehouse

image

imageHi friends, I hope you all are doing well.  We’re happy in the Johnson household, Cole got home over the weekend after a TDY to Guam this month.  His first day back we visited an awesome warehouse that a friend told me about, thank-you Michael.  This warehouse is packed full of gems, I could have spent hours looking through all the goodies. The kiddos were about to pull their hair out, but I must say they had something for everyone.  It’s a great place for gifts, they have everything from large outdoor furniture and statues, to silk pajamas, jewelry, just about anything you can think of.  The staff was very friendly and spoke great English.  For all of you stationed on the island, this place is a must.  I was told the selection changes with each shipment, so there’s always something new to see.  It’s just a few miles from Torii Station in Yomitan.

IMG_0057Directions: Chikyu Zakka is about a 15-20 minute drive from Kadena Gates 1 or 3 and only about 5 minutes from Torii’s main gate. To get there, take 58 going North and turn left on 6 toward Torii Station. You will pass the main gate to Torii on the left. A few lights down you’ll come to a Max Value on the right. Two lights past the Max Value, you will turn left. There will also be a blue sign to Yomitan Care Center at this light. After turning left, drive down a few blocks and you will see Chikyu Zakka on the left.  Plenty of parking is available.

Hope you have a great rest of your week!  Happy decorating!

Color Me Red

Happy Valentines to you all, I hope you have a wonderful day with your loved ones.  Today’s blog post is about two bold beautiful colors that go hand in hand with this holiday of love, red and pink.  Here are a few of my favorite finds that I thought I would share with you for Valentines.

red 1This rich red and gold combination and the framed silk pajamas look beautiful together.

red 2 If you are in the market for an exterior update, how about this red front door, warm and welcoming. (source House Beautiful) This particular red is by Benjamin Moore, Heritage Red.

red 3This is a unique Asian inspired vanity, check out the hardware and basins, very nice.  The red is what draws you in and crabs your attention.

red 4This room is simply decorated with the focal point being the gallery wall and the red upholstered headboard.  The red livens the room and can easily be slipcovered or reupholstered with season. This is a very affordable option for anyone looking to update a bedroom.

red 5

Painting the inside of your cabinetry or piece of furniture really showcases the contents and is an easy DIY project.

red 6

The red trim is a bold statement, not sure I’d be brave enough to try this, but I think it looks amazing. (via www.homeadore.com)

pink 1This is a lovely bathroom with the neutral gray and white wallpaper, add a few pink accents and it livens up the space.
